ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE GIVES TUITION RELIEF A BOOST!
The student-led ballot initiative to freeze tuition just got a big boost.
On Tuesday, the Assembly Higher Education Committee voted to approve AB 2372, the College Affordability Act of 2008. And our student leaders filled up more than half of the hearing room!
This bill is identical to the ballot initiative.
Why are we using this two-pronged approach?
Many of our student volunteers, while collecting signatures to qualify for the ballot, have been asked why they are not instead pursuing a legislative route.
We have frankly been frustrated by past attempts at getting a tuition bill through the Legislature. But we are willing to offer the Legislature an opportunity to try again.
We welcome passage of the College Affordability Act through the Legislature or on the ballot, or in any way that enacts the first long-term tuition policy in decades.
Of course, our focus remains on collecting the signatures to get on the November ballot.
But this is a big encouragement for our efforts. Let’s thank the Assemblymembers who voted for the bill:
Assemblymember Juan Arambula (Fresno)
Assemblymember Jim Beall (San Jose)
Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (La Cañada - Flintridge)
Assemblymember Ira Ruskin (Redwood City)
… and our awesome author, Assemblymember Joe Coto (San Jose) (who also took time to pose with our student organizers!), and co-authors Assemblymember Mike Davis (Los Angeles) and Assemblymember Anthony Portantino.
Please drop them a note or a phone call to thank them for being champions of students!
